Measure your child from the waist or where he/she like to wear a kilt. Waist measurement is very important and your child must stand erect for proper measurement. Now measure from down the bottom the top knee of your child. Use a scissor to cut a measured length. You must add an extra 1 to 1.5 inches for hemstitching. Leave the width for fastening. If you are making kilts in cotton, then it is usually about 45 inches wide. Whereas woolens are 54 or 60 inches wide. For example, if the length of the kilt is 12 inches of your child, then you should not cut the length of 12 inches. Now you have to cut the cotton fabric to measure 13-13.5 inches by 45 inches.
Hemstitched
The extra 1-1.5 inch is used for hemstitching the edge of the long side of the fabric. In this way, you will have a fabric piece of 12 inches by 45 inches. Lay the fabric on top of the table and measure 10 inches from the right side and place a pin there. Measure 10 inches from the left side as well and place a pin there.
Now pleats the remaining fabric which is 25 inches to 35 inches. Measures the pleats equally and for better inch calculation, you can use electronic calculation. The pleats must be neat which gives an adorable look to the viewers. Deep and hot ironing of pleats with iron. Flat and straight ironing of pleats is essential for a better look. For finishing look, you must fold the top edge of the fabric to the wrong side and sew 1 to 1.5 inches with a sewing machine.
The next step is to sew one piece of hook & loop tape. It can be sewn to the right side of the left 10-inch panel. Align the other part of the strip and sew it to the wrong side. Furthermore, the tape will match up and hold the kilt in place.
